New to Scouting? Here’s the skinny:
- Cub Scouts is for boys in the 1st through 5th grades. Boy Scouts is for young men beginning in the sixth grade, up to age 18. Venture Crews are boys and girls between ages 14 and 20.
- Cub Scout groups are called packs. Boy Scouts are in troops, and Venturers are in crews. Packs, troops, and crews are also called units.
- Each unit has its own meeting place, usually in a church or school. Units meet once a week, although some meet less often.
- Most units have between 15 and 50 members. Boy Scout troops are organized into smaller groups of six to eight boys called patrols. Cubs in a pack are organized by age, in groups of 8 to 12 boys, called dens.
- OK so far? Don’t worry, you won’t be tested on this until tomorrow.
More info
- Volunteers, usually moms and dads, run units. There are no paid leaders. And you will get out of scouting what you put into it. If you get involved, your child will appreciate it and will enjoy it more.
- Cub Scout packs have a Cubmaster, who is, essentially, master of the cubs. This person works directly with the scouts helping to coordinate their activities. Otherwise packs are managed by a committee, whose members handle the administrative and financial matters.
- Cub Scouts learn about fitness, citizenship, integrity, personal responsibility, spiritual growth, character development, and service to others. And we have lots of fun doing it.
- Boy Scouts learn how to be leaders, to think independently, be resourceful, and persevere through adversity.
- The highest award a scout can earn is the Eagle rank. Many who earn their Eagle rank go on to become presidents, astronauts, professionals, and business leaders.
- When scoring student enrollment applications, many colleges and universities award extra points for Eagle Scouts. Some even give scholarships!
